Medieval wedding dresses
Floral decoration of wedding dresses began to practice since ancient times. To date, it has become almost a tradition. It’s no secret that before the concept of “wedding dress” did not exist. It was not a separate kind of costume.
Then the dresses in which the wedding took place, were the most expensive and beautiful.
The first mention of the wedding dress falls on the 15th century. Novelty and originality – this is the main thing that came to us from antiquity. Wedding dress should be not only beautiful, but also worn for the first time. A wedding dress is another part of the dowry. The presence of the dowry, as you know, was a prerequisite, without which it was impossible to marry. The woman had to bring a large amount of all sorts of good into the house. The husband provides the house – this is his main contribution. It is worth noting that such details were noted in the wedding contract. As for the wedding dress, the contract specified how much and what fabrics, furs and other elements went to its production.
In the 15th century as wedding dresses were dresses with a corset (Cotati). In appearance they resembled evening dresses with long sleeves, high waist and triangular neckline. Then there was still a fashion for pregnancy, and women often placed under the dress false “tummies”. This can be seen in Gothic sculpture and painting of the medieval era.
The headdress of the medieval bride was a Gothic tower. They were called eneny (sometimes reached a height of 1 m). With such a wedding element is not something to walk, it was hard to stand. So brides always kept their faces down, allowing them to keep Enen on their heads. Wedding and evening dresses in terms of color were very diverse, as the color is not regulated. And the ladies could easily choose an outfit that meets their desires and skin tone.
